Legendary NFL Teams with the Most Championship Wins

When remembering the best NFL teams in history, it can be easy to focus on those with the most Super Bowl titles.

Of course, it’s something that we all do for every sport. It’s only natural. As any game fan knows, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots are the joint most successful in Super Bowl wins, having won six each. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have five each, with the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs each have four. Twenty of the 32 teams have won a Super Bowl.

However, the story can look a little different when you look at the teams with the most championship wins and remember that there was a time before the Super Bowl era.

Most Championship Wins

The most championships won by a team can often go overlooked. Some fans won’t remember these, as they’ll remember what happened in the game after (Super Bowl). Win or lose, this will be remembered more than the fact that the team was the AFC/NFC Champion.

The Packers have the most championships in history, having won 13. They have won more than anyone else by some distance. The Chicago Bears are second, with nine. Fans of the NFL will recognize that these two franchises are among some of the most iconic, and their ranking within this metric will have helped with their standing.

The New York Giants are third on the list with eight. Given how they have been playing over the last decade or so, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we had to wait to see Big Blue add another NFC Championship title to their tally. They do hold the record for most appearances in the Super Bowl, with 22.

Will the Kansas City Chiefs add to their six?

One team that might add one to their total soon is the Kansas City Chiefs. The current Super Bowl Champions have six AFC Championships, and it wouldn’t be a shock if they added a seventh.

They are currently 4-0 in the 2024 season, and the American football odds have them as the early favorites to win the Vince Lombardi trophy once again. A price of 6.00 is available to punters who believe Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and co. can pull it off once again. The odds available to suggest we could see a repeat of last year’s main event, as the San Francisco 49ers are second with a price of 8.00.

Two other teams will be hoping to add a seventh championship to their records, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots both joining the Chiefs.

Teams with Championships but No Super Bowls

Given that most refer to the sport’s championship history based on the Super Bowl era, this can harm the reputation of some franchises that were successful before the merger/changes that were experienced.

Four teams have never made it to the Super Bowl. However, two have had championships or made the championship game.

The Cleveland Browns are one of those. The organization has four titles, each coming in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1964. The Detroit Lions can also be included in this list, as they have four championships, winning in 1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957.

The Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are the only two other teams to not have appeared in a championship game. They are two of the newest franchises in the league, though, having been formed in 2002 and 1995, respectively.

Are the 1972 Miami Dolphins the most legendary NFL team?

Although the Miami Dolphins may only have two championships in their history, their 1972 efforts will go down as being one of the most legendary.

The franchise completed a perfect season when they won Super Bowl VII, going 14-0 throughout the season before defeating the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) 14-7.

Don Shula’s team achieved a 3-3 record in preseason, but this clearly didn’t impact their performances throughout the campaign. They led the league in points scored and allowed the fewest points, making it a truly perfect season for the team and one that has become legendary.

It’s unlikely we’ll ever see another team achieve this feat. After four games so far this year, only the Chiefs and the Minnesota Vikings have the chance to do it.
