SDS Featured Athlete – Pupungatoa Katoa

Pupungatoa Katoa at Trinity High School.

Behind the towering frame of Trinity High School offensive lineman Pupungatoa Katoa is a story of love, loss, and unwavering drive.

At 6’4” and 342 pounds, Katoa dominates in the trenches with grit and quiet leadership. But his journey goes far beyond football. Every rep, every block, and every goal is fueled by something deeper:

a promise to honor his late mother, who passed away from cancer in 2023.

“I dedicate it all to my loved ones here on Earth, the name I have, and those on the other side of the veil,” Katoa said.

On Mother’s Day 2025, Pupungatoa made his college decision public—committing to SMU. It was more than a football move. It was a tribute.

Foundation of Faith and Family

Katoa’s drive comes from three pillars: God, family, and school. His father has been a constant motivator, pushing him to become the best version of himself and to lead by example for his younger brother.

At Trinity, Pupungatoa is a central part of a proud Polynesian tradition. The team’s pregame Sipi Tau, a Tongan war dance, is more than a ritual—it’s a celebration of heritage, pride, and unity.

A Gentle Giant with a Warrior’s Spirit

Known for his gritty playstyle and humble mindset, Katoa leads by action. His presence uplifts his teammates, and his commitment never wavers.

With his eyes set on the future, Katoa is focused on growth and development. His ultimate dream? The NFL Draft. But his path continues at SMU, where he’ll carry his family name, cultural pride, and elite work ethic into every snap.

Next Stop: The U.S. Army Bowl

This December, Pupungatoa will take the national stage, competing in the prestigious U.S. Army Bowl – “The Game”, after earning an invitation through his standout performance at a Signing Day Sports showcase.

Katoa’s story is more than a football journey—it’s a story of purpose, resilience, and carrying loved ones with every step forward.
